In order to make your tax prep visit as easy as possible I have compiled a list of documents that are needed to complete your tax preparation. These documents are needed but are often forgotten.
Identification - Everyone who is on the tax return must be identified. For taxpayers and their spouses, this is usually your state issued ID. For children, a social security card or birth certificate is usually used to verify their identity.
1095-A - If you had health insurance through the marketplace (healthcare.gov) this form is required for your tax return. If you receive a 1095-B or 1095-C, you can keep those for your records but they are not currently needed for your tax return.
Form 8332 - This form is filled out by the custodial parent for years that the non-custodial parent is able to claim their child/children. The IRS no longer accepts divorce decrees or any documentation other than the 8332 as proof of your eligibility to claim your child as a dependent.
Daycare statement - If you paid for childcare you should receive a statement from the provider, both in-home and centers, with the amount you paid along with the name, address, and TAX ID. The Tax ID is often the missing piece of information. This will typically be a daycare centers EIN number or an in-home providers social security number. Without this piece of information you cannot claim child care expenses on your return.
Prior Year Tax Return - If H & K Tax LLC did not complete your tax return last year, we will need a copy of it. There is often data from one year that is needed for the next year.
