In order to make your tax prep visit as easy as possible I have compiled a list of documents that are needed to complete your tax preparation. These documents are needed but are often forgotten at home or just not brought in because the client didn't know they were necessary.
Child Residency - In order to claim the tax credits associated with children, you must be able to prove they lived with you. The IRS typically likes to see School/Daycare or Medical/Healthcare Records. Typically something with the child's name and your address.
the Marketplace, you will receive at least 1 of these 3 documents. If you get more then one, bring them all.
Form 8332 - This form is filled out by the custodial parent for years that the non-custodial parent is able to claim their child/children. The IRS no longer accepts divorce decrees or any documentation other than the 8332 as proof of your eligibility to claim your child as a dependent.
Daycare statement - If you paid for childcare you should receive a statement from the provider, both in-home and centers, with the amount you paid along with the name, address, and TAX ID. The Tax ID is often the missing piece of information. This will typically be a daycare centers EIN number or an in-home providers social security number. Without this piece of information you cannot claim child care expenses on your return.
